Wychwood Barns #1 (Bird)
Wychwood Barns is a community centre and multi-use park for the surrounding Wychwood community and general public.
The original Barns, known as Wychwood Carhouse /St. Clair Carhouse was a five building structure on 4.3 acres, constructed between 1913 and 1921, and used to house and repair streetcars.
In 1998, councilor Joe Mihevc, with the help of architect Joe Lobko and the community, transformed the five barns into the adaptive-reuse space we know today:
Barn 1 - live-work studio and housing for community artists
Barn 2 - community gathering space.
Barn 3 - private-public spaces for non-profits.
Barn 4 - greenhouse, community garden, and Market
Barn 5 - roofless open space, now the Global Roots Garden.
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Mississaugas, Seneca, Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat, inhabited this area.
Since 2008 The Barns has been operated by Artscape.
Wychwood Barns hosts many cultural events including music, theatre, dance, and an annual Trivia Night!
