Skeleton Lake

SKU: 152

Skeleton Lake, formed 800 million years ago as a result of a meteorite impact, now makes for a watersport paradise. Estimated to be the largest open body of water in all the Muskoka lakes, there is plenty of room for sailing and windsurfing.

Skeleton Lake, or pool of bones, derives its name from two skeletons found by surveyors on the north shore. Folklore has it that these belong to a mother and her ill son, unable to move on when their food ran out.

For over 10,000 years, First Nations, including the Anishinaabeg, Ojibwe, and Huron-Wendat First Nations inhabited this area.

The aptly named One Tree Island, featured in this design, is a popular landmark for boaters and artists alike.

There are numerous summer camps in the area and a cottagers' association.
