Port Credit
Port Credit is located in Mississauga at the mouth of the Credit River on the north shore of Lake Ontario.
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years inhabited the area, including the Mississauga Ojibwe who established a trading post in 1720 for exchange of European goods for furs. At the time the river was known as the Missinhe or "trusting creek". The river’s mouth was known as "Port Credit", as goods were traded or bought on credit.
Today, the original core village is now a heritage conservation district, with the harbour a popular destination for boating.
Often referred to as Mississauga's "Village on the Lake", Port Credit hosts numerous festivals and events including the Waterfront Festival (June), and The Port Credit In-Water Boat Show (August).
