Ottawa was founded in 1826 as Bytown, and later renamed to Ottawa in 1855. The name Ottawa is derived from the Algonquin "adawe", meaning "to trade."
The Canadian Tulip Festival, est. in 1953, celebrates the friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. In World War II Canadians played a significant role in the liberation of the Netherlands, and the Dutch expressed their thanks by sending thousands of tulip bulbs to the Capital. This gift became an annual tradition.
