Newmarket

Newmarket, on the Holland River in York Region, was once considered the "new" market in contrast to the "old" market of York / Toronto, thus the name.
 
Now, of course, with suburban development of the 50's to 70's, and the arrival of highway 404, we know Newmarket as an established vibrant modern community in its own right.
 
Quakers, fleeing Vermont, following the violence of the American Revolution were early settlers of Newmarket in 1800.
 
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Wendat (Huron), Tionontati (Petun), Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabeg inhabited this area.
