Milton
Milton's charming tree lined streets, award winning schools, and stunning views of the Niagara Escarpment, make it one of Ontario's most beloved towns.
European settlement of the area began in 1818, with Jasper Martin from Newcastle, England, who built a grist mill and a pond to power it. The town, with a population of approx. one hundred was formally named in 1837, after the English poet John Milton.
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Ojibway, Anishinaabe, and Wendat inhabited this area. Nearby Crawford Lake Conservation area, with its reconstructed Longhouse Village, offers a view into 15th century living.
Many notable celebrities hail from Milton, including astronaut Chris Hadfield, inventors P.L. Robertson (Robertson screwdriver) and Ben Gulak (Uno the eco-friendly electric vehicle), and a personal fave Ernie Coombs, a.k.a. Mr Dressup!
