Lake Joseph

Lake Joseph, surrounded by cottages, is connected to Lake Rosseau through the narrows at Port Sandfield and the Joseph River.
 
Lake Joseph has 91km of shoreline, a maximum depth of 25 meters, and is exceptionally clear - you can see down over 6 meters. It is populated by oligotrophs, organism that can survive on very little nutrients, so debris clouding the water is almost non-existent.
 
in 1868 the Free Grants and Homestead Act was passed, and Homesteaders were allotted 15 acres of Muskoka land. Many opted to settle near Lake Joseph.
 
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Anishinaabeg inhabited this area. Muskoka, was named after Musquakie (William Yellowhead), a key Anishinaabeg negotiator with the British during the mid-nineteenth century.
