Haliburton Highlands, located two hours from Toronto just south of Algonquin Park, with an elevation above sea level reaching 1450 ft. is one of the highest regions of the Canadian Shield.

 

The natural beauty of this locale, with its lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife provides inspiration for the many artists that reside and visit the area. Be sure to check out the Haliburton Highlands Studio tour in the first two weeks of October.

 

The original name for the area of Haliburton Highlands is Ogidaaki, or Gidaaki which translates to ‘Upwards Earth”. 

 

First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Mississauga inhabited the area as hunter gatherers when the land would have been tundra like.

 

In 1864 the first saw mill in the area opened to support the local lumber economy, and shortly after In 1874 Haliburton County was named after Thomas Chandler Haliburton, the first chairman of the Canadian Land and Emigration Company.
