Fort York
Fort York, also known as Garrison, is home to the National Historic Site of Fort York (1793) as well as a blossoming modern community of condominiums and high-rises.
Historically the neighbourhood was largely industrial, and once the home of the Molson Brewery (prior to demolishion in 2006).
Historians will remember Fort York as the battleground where British soldiers, First Nations warriors and Upper Canadian militiamen defended Toronto in the War of 1812 against the United States looking to capture the city.
First Nations, dating back over 10,000 years, including the Mississaugas, Seneca, Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat, inhabited this area.
Since 2005 this locale continues to develop into a modern mixed-use community, expected to hold over 6000 housing units, with various innovative public spaces like the Bentway.
