Bendale

SKU: 223

Bendale, located in eastern Toronto, in the former suburb  of Scarborough, is one of the most diverse family neighbourhoods in the city.

Bendale residents are a mosaic of 151 different ethnic origins, with 60% being first generation new Canadians.

Given that families with children make up 42% of households it is no wonder there are so many wonderful parks, ravines, and schools in the area.

Highland Creek, featured in this design, originates near Steeles Avenue and flows  south through a large ravine, eventually emptying into Lake Ontario at the eastern end of the Scarborough Bluffs. The creek and its West Highland Creek tributary run through several parks.

Originally named Benlomond, after Ben Lomond, a mountain in the Scottish Highlands, the name was shortened in 1881 to Bendale.

First Nations,  dating back over 10,000 years, including the Mississaugas, Seneca, Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat, inhabited this area.

Fun fact: As a grade schooler Carolyn competed as a long jumper in her first track meet in Bendale.
